This series of engines are usually to be found on a variety of industrial applications such as Generators, Pumps, Compressors, Winches,
Diamond Cutters, Floor Cleaners, Stump Grinders etc.
They have an opposed twin cylinder arrangement with the air filter sat on top between the cylinders.
They are side valve with the spark plugs set near the centre of the flat cylinder heads.
The fuel tank will usually be remote (fitted away for the engine).
If there is a pull start, this will be on the side, with the crankshaft emerging horizontally on the opposite side.
Electric start only versions have a flat mesh covering the flywheel on the side. There is also an option for a drive shaft extension on the flywheel side.
The Model, Type and Code numbers are either stamped into the pressed steel engine cowling at one end or along one of the sides.
Some have them on a small aluminium plate rivited to the top of the cowling.
The Model number will begin either 40 or 42.
Notice of possible service disruption Between the last week of June and the first two weeks of July, Briggs and Stratton will be implementing a global update of all systems. During this period, there will be no movements of parts or engines from their distribution centres.
This will impact on our service to customers. In readiness for this, we are endeavouring to increase our stocks in line with anticipated sales over this period however, it is inevitable that some items will become out of stock due to unexpected sales trends. Similarly, many less popular parts ordered through the special orders system which we do not hold here, will experience a fairly substantial delay. We are already noticing some disruption in parts movement as Briggs prepare for this monumental change.
We shall endeavour to keep customers informed where we become aware of any orders or enquiries for parts affected. Some anticipated availability times will no doubt be somewhat disappointing but we will try to be realistic rather than promising something that is unlikely or unachievable.
All being well the disruption will be kept to a minimum and our increased stock holdings will largely allow the majority of regular orders to be processed as normal. Appologies in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause
