This series of engines are usually to be found on ride-on lawnmowers and garden tractors but can also be used on other high spec applications.
They have the two cylinders arranged in a "V" orientation at approx 45 degrees from each other.
The spark plugs are fitted fairly deep to the side of each rocker cover.
The air filter is usually a large diameter, round cartridge inside a square metal cannister
or a flat rectangular cartridge inside a plastic retainer. Both can be found at the front of the engine.
The 54 and 61 series engines may have an alternative multi-stage cyclonic air filter with smaller diameter cylindrical air filters in a tubular housing.
"Vanguard Twin" is usually written fairly prominently on a sticker.
The Model, Type and Code numbers are stamped either into one of the rocker cover sides
or on a small alluminium plate rivited to the top or side of the main engine cowling.
The Model begins with either 29, 30, 35, 38, 54 or 61
The 54 and 61 models are generally referred to as "big block"
Notice of possible service disruption Between the last week of June and the first two weeks of July, Briggs and Stratton will be implementing a global update of all systems. During this period, there will be no movements of parts or engines from their distribution centres.
This will impact on our service to customers. In readiness for this, we are endeavouring to increase our stocks in line with anticipated sales over this period however, it is inevitable that some items will become out of stock due to unexpected sales trends. Similarly, many less popular parts ordered through the special orders system which we do not hold here, will experience a fairly substantial delay. We are already noticing some disruption in parts movement as Briggs prepare for this monumental change.
We shall endeavour to keep customers informed where we become aware of any orders or enquiries for parts affected. Some anticipated availability times will no doubt be somewhat disappointing but we will try to be realistic rather than promising something that is unlikely or unachievable.
All being well the disruption will be kept to a minimum and our increased stock holdings will largely allow the majority of regular orders to be processed as normal. Apologies in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause
